If you’ve been affected by the recent Deferred Resignation Program (DRP) – whether you chose to leave, were encouraged to go, or are still wrestling with the decision – you are not alone. Chances are, you or someone you know has been navigating these uncertain waters.
The DRP, an initiative designed to help downsize the United States Federal government, has introduced a season of change none of us could have fully anticipated. For current and former Federal employees like me, the first four months of 2025 have been filled with anxiety, fear of the unknown, and stress about careers many of us have spent decades building. To say we have been knocked off balance is an understatement.
And while the world outside the Federal workforce might not fully understand, empathize, or care about the weight of what we are carrying, God does.
But today, I’m not here to debate the rightness or wrongness of the DRP. I want to invite you to see it from a different perspective – a higher one.
Because what if this unexpected shake-up isn’t meant to destroy our futures – but instead, it is an opportunity to redirect us into them?
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28 (ESV)
Over the past few months, I have noticed something stirring in and among my colleagues. Beneath the fear and uncertainty, there’s also been hope. Dreams buried under years of routine and responsibility are starting to surface. Gifts that were sidelined are being rediscovered. People are stepping out in faith to pursue what has been burning in their hearts for years.
I understand this because I was there, too. For years, I chased a paycheck, a retirement plan, and the security of government work. I wasn’t chasing purpose – I was chasing stability. Even though I knew deep down I was called to something greater, I never made the move – until now.
Maybe you can relate.
Maybe you have felt that nudge toward something different, something deeper and more meaningful.
And now, here you are. Standing at a “Fork in the Road” you didn’t ask for. But what if this “Fork” is exactly the moment God had in mind for you all along?
“And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
Esther 4:14 (ESV)
Here is the truth: God’s plans are never random. He knows how to use every transition, every uncertainty, and every closed door to bring about something far better than we imagined.
We each share the same ultimate purpose, the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20), but our assignments are as unique as our fingerprints. Some of us are gifted leaders, speakers, writers, counselors, and mentors. Many of the skills we sharpened during our Federal careers, such as leadership, project management, and communication, were preparation for the next assignment God has for us.
He didn’t create us just to climb a career ladder. He designed us to build His Kingdom.
“A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before the great.”
Proverbs 18:16 (ESV)
So, what’s stirring in your heart? What gifts have you been carrying quietly all these years? What dreams have you put on hold?
This could be your invitation to seek first the Kingdom (Matthew 6:33) and trust that everything else you need will follow. God is your Source. The job was only a resource. Resources come and go, but God remains faithful.
Maybe it is time to believe again. To dream big again. To step into the calling that’s been waiting for you while you labored in your Federal job.
The world needs what God has placed inside of you. Books will be written. Businesses will be born. Ministries will rise. Families will heal. Souls will be saved.
Your Federal career was important, and you should be proud of the service you provided. But there is even more ahead. You are being Divinely Redirected for a Purpose.
And this time, you won’t just be building a career.
You’ll be building the Kingdom.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for lovingly redirecting our steps, even when the path feels uncertain. Help us to trust that this season of change is not meant to harm us but to guide us into the greater purpose You have prepared. May we walk forward in faith, knowing we are being Divinely Redirected for a Purpose.
I read every word and I too have felt everything you have talked about here. 28 years in federal service and now so much uncertainty, but…. I also have a dream that has taken a backs seat to a very busy and demanding career. I don’t know how the story will end (whereas my fed career will go) however o too feel the nudge and agree – God has called us to so much more. Thank you so much for your words, they made an imprint in my heart.
Hi Belinda! First of all – THANK YOU for your SERVICE!! 28 years! WOW! I have 26 years and 9 months. Thank you so much for reading this post and for your comment. One of my favorite literary agents wrote a blog post a few years ago that talks about not waiting until retirement. He was talking about writing, but it is so true for the desires of our hearts. What really matters is God’s calling on our lives. As we have seen, careers come and they go. God and His Kingdom are forever. I pray you find peace in whatever decision you make. And I am so happy these words touched you. Blessings!
