I’ve always loved digging into the meaning of words, and sometimes the simplest ones reveal the most. Take the word publish, for example. At its root, it means to make public or generally known. That is exactly what authors do; we make our work public so others can read, learn, enjoy, and be encouraged. God works the same way with the dreams and visions He plants in our hearts. Some stay just between Him and us, but many are meant to be shared so they can serve others.

Scripture is full of dreams and visions that God asked people to write down and release. Moses received the Ten Commandments, which God Himself engraved on stone tablets (Exodus 34:28). But when I think about writing and publishing a God-given vision, I always think of the prophet Habakkuk. God gave him a vision—His plan for Judah—and told him to write it plainly on tablets so anyone passing by could read it quickly and easily (Habakkuk 2:2, AMPC).

So why must we write down the dreams, visions, and messages God gives us? Because writing preserves what God says. It keeps His words from fading or getting lost over time. Writing also brings clarity; it slows us down enough to process His direction. It helps us separate our emotions from His guidance and turns a vague idea into something we can grasp, pray over, and act on. And just as importantly, writing prepares us to share God-given messages with others.

In last week’s post, “If I Only Imagine,” I shared the dream God placed in my heart that eventually became Break Down Better: 52 Restoring Devotionals for Burned-Out Women. If you missed it, I encourage you to read about the handwritten note God used to speak to me. The second word in that note was “Publish.” God used that one word to tell me the dream wasn’t just for me. He intended it to be shared—to help, encourage, and restore others.

When God gives us a dream, writing it down becomes an act of obedience and faith. Writing preserves and clarifies the vision. And writing prepares the vision to reach the people who will one day need it.

If you’re carrying a dream today, no matter how small, fragile, or unfinished, take the next step: write it down and make it known. God will give you the words and shape the message. Imagine with Him. Write with Him. And watch in awe as He brings the dream to life.
